What's taking up space on my drive? See the map

The C: bar went red. You open Windows storage settings, look at the breakdown and read something like this: Apps 40 GB · Documents 12 GB · Other 180 GB.

Other. One hundred and eighty gigabytes called “other”.

And so the blind hunt begins: open a folder, look, open another, right-click Properties, wait for the counter, close, try the next one. Twenty minutes later you gave up and deleted a couple of movies out of sheer guilt — without ever finding where those 180 GB went.

The problem isn’t you. It’s that “what’s eating my drive?” is a visual question, and nobody ever gave you a picture. This guide is about seeing the whole disk on a single screen.

Why a folder list never answers this#

A list is great for finding one file and terrible for understanding proportion. You see fifty folder names, all in the same font size, all with the same yellow icon. Nothing on screen tells you the third one weighs a thousand times more than the other forty-nine combined.

Worse: in Windows File Explorer the Size column is empty for folders — always, every one of them. A folder’s size is the sum of everything inside it, all the way down, and Windows skips that calculation so the window can draw fast. The result: the exact number you came for is the only one the list won’t show.

To see space, you need a different format: screen area proportional to size on disk. A folder holding 90 GB should take up ninety percent of the picture. Then the answer jumps out at you instead of requiring arithmetic.

Step 1 — start with drives, not folders#

In Elegant File Explorer, open Go ▸ This computer….

You get one card per drive — local disk, USB stick, network drive — with its name, letter and a usage bar in traffic-light colours: green while there’s room, amber when it gets tight, red when the drive is at its limit. Next to it, the number in plain English: “120 GB free of 931 GB”.

Before any cleanup, this panel already settles a common doubt: is it even the right drive? Plenty of people spend an afternoon cleaning C: when the one that filled up was D:, or an external drive left plugged in. Thirty seconds here save an hour of work in the wrong place.

Step 2 — the map: every rectangle is a folder#

Pick the drive that’s tight and click Map space.

The app scans the drive and draws a space map: one rectangle per folder, sized in proportion to the space it actually takes. The biggest one sits in the top corner, smaller ones settle around it, all coloured by file family. It’s a photograph of your disk.

A few things that help you read it:

  • One click goes in. Clicked the giant rectangle? The map redraws showing what’s inside it. You keep diving until you reach the culprit — usually three or four clicks.
  • Double-click opens the folder in the app, in the normal listing, so you can act on the files.
  • The long tail becomes one block. Instead of a thousand unreadable slivers, tiny items are grouped as “1,240 more items”. The map stays legible.
  • The scan shows progress and can be cancelled — while measuring it says “Measuring…” with a running count of what it has added up. A big drive takes a moment; change your mind and Cancel stops it cleanly, nothing hangs.
  • You can map a single folder. The Choose folder… button points the map anywhere — your projects folder, Downloads, a network share. Handy when you already know the neighbourhood and just want the street.

What usually turns up in these maps, from experience: a forgotten backup folder nobody remembered, the cache of a video editing app, a duplicated photo library sitting in a corner, and the eternal pile of installers downloaded “to install later”.

Step 3 — from “where” to “what”#

The map takes you to the folder. Then comes the second question: what inside it is heavy?

Right-click the folder and choose Statistics. The app analyses that folder including everything in its subfolders — the scan walks the whole tree, runs in the background with progress, and can be cancelled at any point. If you stop it, it honestly says the numbers reflect only what had been read so far.

What you get:

  • Hero numbers up top: total size, how many files, how many folders, how many distinct types.
  • Composition by category: a donut splitting Images, Videos, Audio, Documents, Archives, Code, Apps and Others, with a legend and percentages. This is the chart that answers “is it video, photos, or app junk?”.
  • Top types: bars per extension, with a toggle between By size and By count. The two readings tell different stories — a thousand text files lead the count while weighing nothing; three video files do the opposite.
  • Largest files: a straight list of the heaviest items in the tree. Very often the entire cleanup happens right here, in five lines.

Select several items before asking for Statistics and it aggregates the selection — handy to compare “these three project folders” without opening three windows.

Looking isn’t deleting (and that order matters)#

Nothing above removes a single file. That’s deliberate.

Cleanups go wrong the same way every time: someone sorts by size, sees a big file with a strange name, sends it into the void — and three weeks later finds out it was the phone backup. Diagnosis before treatment is what separates freeing space from losing files.

So use the map and the statistics to understand, calmly. Decide afterwards. And when you do decide, take the safe route — which we walked through in free up disk space without deleting anything important and find and remove duplicate files safely.

One tip that pays off: once you’ve found the folder that refills itself (nearly always Downloads), instead of cleaning it again in three months, let a rule handle maintenance — a cleanup that sends anything older than 90 days to the Recycle Bin, never into thin air. The drive stops filling up in silence.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Windows show "Other" taking up so much space?

Because the Windows storage screen classifies by known type and dumps everything that doesn’t fit into “Other” — app caches, projects, virtual machines, backups, game files. It’s a leftover category, not a place. To know what’s in there you need a view by folder, like a space map, which shows the real weight of each directory instead of a generic label.

How do I see a folder's size including all subfolders?

Right-click the folder and open Properties: the total is recursive, meaning it includes everything down the tree, along with file and folder counts. For a richer reading — categories, types and largest files — use Statistics, which also analyses the whole tree and shows it as charts.

Does the space map delete anything?

No. It only measures and draws. One click dives into a rectangle, a double-click opens that folder in the normal listing — no action in the map moves, renames or deletes a file.

Will scanning a large drive freeze my PC?

No. Measuring runs in the background with a progress indicator and a Cancel button always available. You can keep using the app while it measures, and cancelling doesn’t leave anything half-done — it simply stops measuring.

Can I map an external drive or a network folder?
